Highlighting South Jersey's Best: Wings

New Jersey is best known for its gas attendees and high taxes, but many locals know that it also offers an elite culinary scene. From the warm bagels to the Italian bistro entrées, New Jersey offers some of the best food in the Western Hemisphere.

As a South Jersey native, I grew up dining at many local establishments; I had the privilege of trying all different types of unique dishes. While I have grown to love and appreciate different cuisines, I was also lucky enough to grow up in an area that had many American dives. Thus, the buffalo wing quickly became one of my favorite foods.

Over the past two decades, I estimate I have tried around 500 different wing joints on the East Coast; while many of them were delicious, I kept finding myself thinking about my favorite wings in my home region of South Jersey. As I have matured, I realized that I grew up eating some of the best buffalo wings that the United States has to offer. This piece will highlight some of the best wings in South Jersey and analyze what makes them stand out from the rest.

Landmark Americana (Glassboro, N.J.)

Landmark Americana, located in the heart of Glassboro, New Jersey, is best known for its late night vibes. It neighbors Rowan University, so the spot is a staple for students and locals. Many people who attend Landmark end up never trying the food because most of the restaurant’s traffic comes in the late hours of the night; however, they subtly have some of the tastiest wings in South Jersey.
All of their fried wings have a crispiness to them that is felt in every bite. The mild buffalo sauce has a sweet hint to it, but it does not overpower the original buffalo flavor. The menu also features other unique flavors: Kansas City BBQ, roasted garlic parmesan, and pineapple habanero. Pair any of these flavors with blue cheese and a beer, and you will have yourself a satisfied stomach before the real party begins.

Bulldogs Bar & Grill (Egg Harbor City, N.J.)

Right on the White Horse Pike in Egg Harbor City, New Jersey, stands Bulldogs Bar and Grill. Bulldogs is unique because, according to their website, they feature “22 beers on tap, an enticing menu, televisions at every booth, the NFL ticket & a welcomed obsession with local pups.” Bulldogs lives up to its name and claims by serving some of their dishes in dog dishes, further proving their obsession with pups.
The wings are one of the highlights of their menu. They are slender and on the smaller end; one can usually clean a wing with two bites. They also have a subtle crunch to them that makes each bite enjoyable. The mild sauce is reliable, but they offer over ten more alternative options, including an inferno sauce which comes with a “no refund” warning. Overall, Bulldogs boast some of the most underrated wings in South Jersey.

Charlie's Bar & Restaurant (Somers Point, N.J.)

Charlie’s Bar & Restaurant, located in Somers Point, New Jersey, is one of the most historic restaurants in the entire state. “At the Shore Since ‘44” is plastered all over their apparel, and there is a reason that they have been in business for over 80 years – their wings.
Compared to other South Jersey wing spots, Charlie’s wings are on the larger end. Each wing is fat and loaded with meat. Oftentimes, places with that style of wing cannot find the correct sauce to meat ratio to make the wing flavorful, but Charlie’s ensures that their wings marinate in their original sauce. This led to the creation of an iconic wing that is routinely a flavorful delight for the consumer.

Juliano's Pub & Grill (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.)

In the heart of Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey sits Julianno’s Pub and Grill, a dive bar beloved by locals. The inhouse liquor store, indoor and outdoor seating options, and friendly environment are why many people continue showing up to Julianno’s, but the food quality is without a doubt the number one thing drawing people in. Specifically, the wings and tail tenders are what customers come in craving.
Julianno’s has one of the most unique buffalo sauces in the area. The sauce is both sweet and hot, but it is so loaded with flavor that one cannot resist grabbing more beyond fullness. The wings themselves are not overly crunchy or large, but they contain near perfect tenderness on a consistent basis. Julianno’s may not be the most popular or known place around, but once a person tries their wings, their life is almost always changed for the better.
