Why The Eagles Can Repeat As Super Bowl Champions In 2025
The Philadelphia Eagles were the Super Bowl champions of the 2024 NFL season, and as many expected, they enter the 2025 season as heavy favorites to hoist the Vince Lombardi Trophy again. A lot will have to go right for the Eagles to win their third Super Bowl, but there are several reasons why they have a great chance to do it this upcoming season.
Offensive Force
The most glaring strength of the Philadelphia Eagles throughout the 2020s has been their skill position groups. Last season, the Eagles demonstrated what the ceiling is for their offense, and with the amount of quality playmakers on the roster, there is no reason they cannot reach that level again.
The Eagles’ offense is headlined by Saquon Barkley, the reigning Offensive Player of the Year. Barkley is among the best running backs in the NFL, and he is fresh off of the best season of his career. In 2024, he rushed for over 2,000 yards and had the second best yards per attempt number, 5.8, among all qualifying running backs. Pairing Barkley with the Eagles’ elite offensive line once again will make for a recipe of success.
What really makes the Eagles a brute force on offense, though, is their receiving core. Even if defenses focus on trying to stop Saquon Barkley, A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith will be on the outside ready to move the sticks with their routes and hands. Dallas Goedert is still a formidable tight end, and last season, he proved his worth by making crucial catches in the post-season. If Barkley, Brown, Smith, and Goedert all stay healthy, much like they did last year, it will again be difficult for even the best NFL defenses to stop them; however, even if one of the core players sustains an injury, the Eagles have enough depth on offense to keep their production afloat.
The Eagles offensive prowess is no secret. By no means is claiming that their offensive force can win them a Super Bowl again is a hot take; they did it last season in dominating fashion. With that said, even if the Eagles cannot find success in other areas of their team, the offense is still great enough to be the singular reason they repeat as Super Bowl champions.
Defensive Development
While the offense has been the identity of the Philadelphia Eagles in recent seasons, the franchise has not shied away from drafting and developing defensive talent. This season, the defense will have more pressure than ever to perform with some of the young stars entering their second and third seasons.
Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean were critical in helping the Eagles win Super Bowl 59 as rookies. Respectively, they each put together rookie campaigns that met the expectations placed on them when they were Eagles drafted; however, they are expected to take a leap forward in their performances as sophomore professionals. If Mitchell and DeJean can both take that next step, the Eagles’ secondary will be amongst the best in the NFL.
This past off-season, the Eagles parted ways with Josh Sweat and Milton Williams. The reason they did that was to give their younger, cheaper defensive linemen the opportunity to continue to play and develop. Jalen Carter will headline the defensive line; last season, he had a breakout season with 42 total tackles and 16 quarterback hits. This season, Carter will need to take another step forward by improving his sack and turnover numbers. In addition to Carter, Moro Ojomo and Jordan Davis are expected to take on more of a role on the interior of the defensive line with Nolan Smith Jr. and Jalyx Hunt doing the same on the outside.
Both the secondary and defensive line may be the areas the Eagles have put much of their focus on, but the linebacking core helps sure up the middle of the field. Zack Baun proved how valuable individual player development can be to a team last season; he went from a depth piece with the New Orleans Saints to an All-Pro with the Eagles. Without Baun, the Eagles may not have won Super Bowl 59. Thus, it is critical that Baun remains a playmaker for the Eagles, and other linebackers like Jihaad Campbell, Jeremiah Trotter Jr., and Smael Mondon Jr. develop alongside him.
If the Eagles defensive players can develop individually and come together as a unit, they will be able to contain any opposing offense on the way to hoisting another Lombardi Trophy. They will be able to even dominate opposing teams if the core group of players can develop beyond their expectations.
The Numbers Say So
Men lie, women lie, but numbers do not lie; luckily for the Philadelphia Eagles, a lot of numbers are on their side.
Jalen Hurts has been the talk of the off-season, as many media professionals have debated where he ranks among NFL quarterbacks. The eye test is one thing, but the numbers say that he is among the winningest quarterbacks in the league. Of all NFL quarterbacks who have at least 50 starts, Jalen Hurts ranks third in winning percentage (69.7%), only behind Patrick Mahomes II and Lamar Jackson. With the Eagles bringing back most of their roster from last season, it is more likely than not that Hurts’ winning percentage will continue to stay among the best in the league. As the Eagles continue to win games, so will their chances of winning another Super Bowl.
Another statistic that indicates the Eagles’ high likelihood to win Super Bowl 60 are the pre-season odds. Since 2018, at least one of the top five teams with the best pre-season odds to win the Super Bowl became champions in each respective year; the Eagles enter this season tied with the Baltimore Ravens for the best odds to win it all at +650. The last team to win the Super Bowl and not rank as one of the top five favorites in the pre-season, ironically, were the Philadelphia Eagles in 2017. Unless a team goes on a 2017-like underdog run this season, Las Vegas predicts the only teams the Eagles have to worry about in 2025 are the Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills, Kansas City Chiefs, and Detroit Lions. Against those four teams as a starter, Jalen Hurts has a combined record of 6-2.
With 32 teams vying for the Lombardi Trophy at the start of each September, the Super Bowl winner is one of the most difficult champions to predict in all of sports. With that said, all signs indicate that the Eagles can, and should, repeat as Super Bowl Champions this upcoming season.
